Medicine at its finest

Medicine really amazes me. Dr. Lopez discussed the hypothalamus and pituitary gland with its corresponding diseases. Then the grand rounds followed with a case on Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type I (MEN I). One feature of this one is acromegaly and you can see really the coarse features of the face, hands and feet. The patient also had gynecomastia and she pointed out that sometimes it's quite hard to differentiate fat in the mammary tissue which is indeed true gynecomastia from fat in the subcutaneous tissue. There's one funny anecdote when the resident was showing some pictures of the patient. He showed the patient 18 years ago, 10 years ago, 4 years ago and the most recent one. He was holding a baby in his hands and we all laughed that the baby was not growing in the pictures.

After that, Dr. Navarra showed in an actual patient. He is suffering from hyperthyroidism and Dr. Navarra asked the two endocrinologist, Dr. Kho and Dr. Asis to do the physical examination of the thyroid. They also showed how to manage this kind of patient with all the medications needed.

During the afternoon, we had our class in Rehabilitation Medicine and we discussed how to do the musculoskeletal examination. Out PT classmate demonstrated the special maneuvers done in a physical examination and we could have had a great time if the airconditioning system was functioning. Neurosurgery class was boring and I am bored enough not to tell you about it. After that I went to the celebration of those who passed the Physician's licensure examination. I stayed up to 2AM there and went home thereafter.
