xvi. constitution

in the cemented stillness of things,
we find ourselves questioning
how creation starts and turns out:
mud to clay to solid rock,
seed to stem to massive tree,
god to love to whatever life we choose.

it all happens so fast, so slow, so sure,
though we are not even sure
if time is on our side,
as highways stretch and buildings rise
and dimensions can no longer
be defined with x and y.

change is a marvel we see everyday:
love transforms, creatures are reformed,
stars shift to finally align
and heed us once more.

and we opine perhaps
why god did not allow any babels to stand
or spiritual mutinies to last
why he cast the curse of brevity to every idol
and monument we erect,
is because we will neither yearn for him

nor learn to Build.
