Revalida at UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery

The dean's office released the schedule for our revalida. Mine was scheduled on the first of March.

The Director of Clinical Programs also released a Revalida Handbook that aims to familiarize both faculty and students with the current rules governing the Revalida examination of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

What is the Revalida?

The Revalida is the final comprehensive examination required of candidates for the debree of Doctorate in Medicine (MD) at the University of Santo Tomas.

Objectives

a. To determine whether or not the candidate possesses the minimum knowledge, skills and attitudes required of a basic physician.
b. To assess if the following objectives of education at the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery have been fulfilled in the candidate:
1. Formation of a basic physician who is educated in the methodology and principles of medicine and who has the necessary background to undergo postgraduate training in any of the specialties in medicine.
2. Formation of a physician who is conscious of and will be responsibe to the particular health and medical needs of the Filipino and society.
3. Formation of a physician who is aware of the spiritual implications - religious and moral - in the practive of medicine, and conscious of the obligations of the physician to the patient and medical profession, in accordance with the teachings of the Church.

Parts
The Revalida is composed of two parts - the first and second exercises - which are given successively to eligible medical clerks.

The Revalida commences with the comprehensive written examination which is administered once a year by the Department of Medical Education on the first Saturday of December.

The drawing of tribunals for the second exercise is done during the last week of January/early February. The oral examinations start in the first week of March. All groups should have finished with the second oral exercise b the last week of March.


First Oral Exercises
In the first oral examination, the student's comprehension of the basic and the clinical sciences is re-evaluated, this time by a tribunal. The performance of the candidate is rated as "pass" or "fail" by each member of the tribunal. These ratings are reflected by the letters "P" and "F"

Grading
The grades obtained indicate the following
PASSED: - 3 Ps - Candidate becomes eligible for the second oral exercise
FAILED: - 1 F - make-up two months in clerkship 2 Fs - 3 months make up 3 Fs - 4 months make-up

Second Oral Exercise
To qualify for the second exercise, the student must have:
1. obtained the grade of 85% or higher in the comprehensive written exercise thereby exempting him/her from the first oral exercise, or
2. passed the first oral exercise with the grade of 3 Ps (PASSED)

The Second exercise requires the student to:
1. examine a patient at the USTH Clinical Division, diagnose the case and present an appropriate plan of investigation and therapy. These must be presented and adequately discussed before the tribunal, then formally submitted as part of the student's expediente.
2. discuss fully and satisfactorily a medical or surgical emergency.

Grading
The Tribunal accomplishes the Evaluation Sheet for each candidate and signs them, then deliberates on the performance of the candidates in the second exercise.

Grading is as follows:
Meritissimus (Excellent) 3 Es
Benemeritus (Very Good) 2 Es, 1P
Meritus (Passed) 3 Ps, 2 Ps 1E, 2Ps 1F, 2Es 1F, 1E 1P 1F
Failed - any combination of grades with at least 2 Fs shall be considered as failed.
