Reming: Hopefully Not Another Milenyo

Tropical storm "Reming," which meteorologists say might become a super typhoon, has strengthened and now threatens Luzon, with the state weather bureau raising public storm warning signal number 1 over Catanduanes province Tuesday afternoon.

A tropical storm is a moderate cyclone with maximum winds of 64 kilometer per hour to 118 kph.

On the other hand, a typhoon is an intense tropical cyclone with wind speeds exceeding 118 kph while a "super typhoon" packs winds of at least 185 kph.

As of 4 p.m., Reming, packing winds of 105 kph with gusts of up to 135 kph, was located at 730 kilometers east of Samar and moving west northwest at 26 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

PAGASA earlier said Reming was expected to hit Metro Manila Friday.

Wednesday afternoon, Reming is expected to be 330 kilometers east of Catanduanes, moving to 170 kilometers east southeast of Baler, Aurora by Thursday afternoon and, by Friday, 80 kilometers west of Dagupan City.

PAGASA warned residents in areas under signal number 1 to be on the alert against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Good thing supertyphoon Reming weakened into a typhoon late yesterday evening after deviating from its course in the afternoon on its destructive path toward Metro Manila and instead bore down on southern Luzon.
