Feast Day of Saint Dominic

It is better to be a hammer than an anvil. - St. Dominic Today is the Feast day of St. Dominic de Guzman. Also known as Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Saint Dominic was the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers. He traveled extensively himself, preaching, both before and after the Dominican order was founded. Following Dominic's ideals, the Dominicans placed an emphasis on scholarship as well as evangelism. All the evidence goes to show that St. Dominic was a man of remarkable attractiveness of character and broadness of vision; he had the deepest compassion for every sort of human suffering; he saw the need to use all the resources of human learning in the service of Christ; his constant reading was St. Matthew's gospel, St. Paul's letters and the Conferences of St. John Cassian.
