I Have a Dream in 2007

by Carlo Cadiz

2007 is an auspicious year for the frat. It's the 40th anniversary of our brotherhood's foundation. It will likewise unboubtedly mark the beginning of another glorious 40 years for the Sigma Beta Tau Phi. And this important milestone must never pass without a celebration befitting an institution which has been an important part of our lives.

My dream therefore is to see a real homecoming for all of us. One that will see all Titans from both sides of the pacific, the opportunity to re-embrace the symbols and values that made us Titans. A gathering that will see all active brods, alumni and students in one island and in one country, will certainly help ensure that our commitment and aspirations for the fraternity remain alive and burning.

We've seen the magical effects of gatherings like these. Subic was huge while Hawaii was absolutely lavish. Through these reunions, we witness the reinvigoration of our Titan ideals and bring us back to where we came from. We see old friends as we meet the newer brothers in our ever enlarging fraternity. In Subic, I envisioned a real homecoming for all Titans. And 220 came. But it was largely a Philippine reunion. In Hawaii, I witnessed Titans USA's power and camaraderie. It brought out the best that our brods in America have to offer. But not all Titans in the Philippines can convince the consuls in the US embassy that they're just going to attend a Titan party.

I am therefore proposing a joint US-Philippine homecoming in Boracay, Philippines sometime in 2007. A reunion that will be Titans USA's 5th and the philippines' 3rd. After next year's Alaska, the US frat will have difficulty finding a venue that will beat LA, New Jersey, Hawaii and Alaska. And after Subic and this year's Tagaytay, I'm sure that the Philippine brods are logistically ready for something like this. If we can combine the Philippine brods' capacity to come up with events of almost olympic proportions and the grace and style of our Hawaiian reunion, the result in Boracay can be a certified blockbuster.

I am proposing this despite the fact that the Philippines is an ocean away from America. But home is where the frat is. I am also
proposing this with the theory that it is far less expensive to go to the Philippines per capita than it is to go to Hawaii or join an Alaskan cruise. With it comes the incentive that we are all coming home to the Philippines in one of the world's best beaches.

Organized by the US as its 5th biennial affair in order to attain maximum attendance from the eastern side of the Pacific, the homecoming will be jointly prepared by the Philippine alumni. This proposal is being made a year before Alaska and 6 months before Tagaytay to ceate an awareness that something like this can be done and should be prepared for well. 3 years before 2007 also eliminates the excuse that the idea is made on such short notice.

Well, Boracay in 2007 is only an idea. I hope we all think about it.
